Capacity and Volume

The children have spent the week learning about capacity and volume. We have been talking about the  difference between the two. They have loved exploring capacity in a practical way. We have been encouraging the use of language such as full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty.  We have been comparing different sizes of containers.

"If you, um, have nothing in a bowl that means it is empty, and if you have a little bit of something like water it means it is nearly empty" said Isabel.

" it can be half full, then nearly full and when it gets to the top you have to stop as it is full" said Georgia.

" when it is half full you can fit more in. When it is at the top it will overflow and get you wet" said Toby.

It would be great if this could be continued on at home - cooking, bathtime, supermarket shop, filling bags and filling the water bottles (to name a few ideas).
